One focus throughout my corporate career has been on advancement and learning the promotion process. I have wondered why others, especially women, weren’t as interested in and/or willing to move up the ladder to attain more responsibility and make more money.
I realized over the years that there wasn’t a lot of specific training for women on the mindset it takes and the process to follow to advance their careers. Many women must overcome societal and cultural conditioning they may have experienced that keeps them from asking for raises and promotions.
As a corporate executive and people manager, I loved promoting my team members who excelled in their careers and I was very proactive about it. And, I realize that wasn’t always the norm for all managers.
The key there was my proactivity. IF, big IF, a woman came to me to ask for a promotion, I’d always ask them why they thought they should be promoted. The usual response was some form of, “because I’ve been here a long time and I do a good job.” Not the right answer. Hint…getting promoted is not just about making more money.
I recently recorded a webinar on the “5 Mistakes Every Woman Needs to AVOID to Advance Her Career and Get Promoted.”
I’d love to get your feedback and any questions that come up for you, so please add them below.
Thanks so much and wishing you the best!
